A Fashion Odyssey Two Years in the Making: Zendaya and Law Roach’s Divine Vision

From sculptural couture to a winged masterpiece reserved years in advance, Zendaya’s The Odyssey press tour proves that unforgettable fashion moments begin long before the red carpet.

In fashion, timing is everything. But for Zendaya and longtime stylist Law Roach, the most memorable moments are not necessarily the ones created overnight. Sometimes, they are the result of a vision imagined years before the world gets to see it. For Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, the actress embraced an entirely different fashion narrative, trading contemporary glamour for an exploration of mythology, classical silhouettes, and extraordinary couture. Portraying Athena, the Greek goddess associated with wisdom and strategic warfare, Zendaya approached the promotional circuit with a wardrobe that reflected the grandeur of the ancient world. From flowing Grecian fabrics to architectural designs reminiscent of marble sculptures, each appearance offered a fresh interpretation of mythological elegance.

Yet one particularly extraordinary ensemble revealed just how far in advance Roach had prepared for the occasion.

Dressing for Olympus: A Modern Goddess Emerges

Zendaya’s The Odyssey promotional appearances began in London with an exploration of soft, fluid silhouettes.

One early look featured an archival Trussardi Spring 2006 dress with delicate pleating and flowing fabric, complemented by embellished Christian Louboutin heels. The ensemble introduced an understated interpretation of Grecian dressing, allowing movement and texture to communicate the film’s classical influences.

On July 5, Zendaya appeared in a custom ivory Jacquemus gown featuring a sleek, draped silhouette and a dramatic open back that extended into an attached headscarf. Ancient disc earrings from Baron London added an element of historical authenticity, creating a striking contrast between contemporary design and antique craftsmanship

The look was minimalist yet commanding, resembling a modern interpretation of a Greek goddess without relying on theatrical accessories or excessive embellishment.

Schiaparelli Turns a Red Carpet Into a Living Sculpture

For the film’s London world premiere on July 6, Zendaya delivered one of the summer’s most extraordinary couture moments.

Wearing the closing look from Schiaparelli’s Fall 2026 couture collection by Daniel Roseberry, she appeared in a sculptural gown featuring a molded, marble-like bodice and a shimmering embellished skirt. The design evoked the appearance of a classical sculpture brought to life. Its structured upper silhouette contrasted beautifully with the movement of the skirt, creating a look that felt both ancient and futuristic. Remarkably, the gown had debuted on the runway in Paris earlier that same day. With her hair styled in a long braid, Chopard diamonds, and Christian Louboutin heels, Zendaya completed a transformation that felt entirely appropriate for an actress portraying a goddess.

The appearance illustrated Roach’s ability to recognize the potential of a runway creation and translate it into a culturally relevant red carpet moment almost immediately.

Archival Fashion With a Mythological Twist

In Paris, the fashion narrative continued through another remarkable archival discovery.

For a July 7 photocall, Zendaya appeared in a Givenchy haute couture design from Spring 1997, created by Alexander McQueen. The ivory ensemble featured exaggerated shoulders, dramatic sleeves, and a structured silhouette that departed from the softer draping seen earlier in the tour. A striking gold Philip Treacy mask completed the look, introducing a ceremonial quality that complemented the film’s mythological setting.

In New York, Zendaya continued the theme with an archival Alberta Ferretti Spring 2008 minidress. Its soft draping and cascading metallic fringe were paired with Sophia Webster gladiator sandals, referencing ancient Mediterranean footwear while maintaining a contemporary, playful silhouette. Across the promotional circuit, the wardrobe illustrated how classical inspiration could be interpreted through entirely different design languages.

The following evening, Zendaya appeared in a custom Louis Vuitton gown featuring intricate lace detailing, sculptural ruffled sleeves, dramatic cutouts, and a sweeping train. While the Givenchy creation explored historical fashion through theatrical structure, the Louis Vuitton ensemble offered a more romantic interpretation of classical elegance.

From minimalism to avant-garde couture, each ensemble contributed to a cohesive visual story without becoming repetitive.

The Winged Masterpiece Two Years in the Making

The most remarkable moment arrived at The Odyssey’s New York premiere on July 14.

Zendaya appeared in an extraordinary white gown by Matières Fécales, an avant-garde Paris-based fashion label founded by designers Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran. The dramatic creation featured a sculpted strapless bodice, intricate pleating, a flowing train, and enormous feathered wings extending from the back. The design evoked Nike of Samothrace, also known as the Winged Victory of Samothrace, one of the most recognizable sculptures from ancient Greek art. Its feathered construction and fluid silhouette created the illusion of a mythological figure stepping into the modern world.

But the story behind the gown was perhaps even more impressive than its appearance. During an interview with E! News, Zendaya revealed that Roach had selected the dress approximately two years before the premiere. In an October 2026 interview with Bustle, Roach explained that he had already anticipated the film’s arrival when he discovered the creation.

“I saw that dress two years ago.” He contacted the designers and requested that the gown be reserved for Zendaya’s future appearance. The designers honored the arrangement, allowing the creative vision to unfold years after Roach first recognized the garment’s potential.

The reason this is so tantalizing is that it was not simply about reserving an impressive dress. Roach had envisioned how a particular garment could complement a future cinematic role, the actress wearing it, and the occasion on which it would eventually appear. It was fashion planning on an entirely different timeline. The moment also elevated Matières Fécales, giving the emerging luxury label a prominent position on one of Hollywood’s most anticipated red carpets. For a stylist celebrated for his ability to identify exceptional designs, the appearance offered another example of how creative foresight can connect designers, performers, and cultural moments.

Cloud Dancer: When Fashion Foresight Meets the Color of the Year

Another fascinating detail of Zendaya’s promotional wardrobe was its connection to the broader color conversation of 2026.

In December 2025, Pantone announced PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer as its Color of the Year for 2026. The soft, airy white was presented as a symbol of clarity, tranquility, and renewal, reflecting a growing appreciation for simplicity and quiet elegance.

Throughout The Odyssey press tour, Zendaya’s wardrobe explored similar visual qualities through shades of white, ivory, and cream. The custom Jacquemus gown, sculptural Schiaparelli creation, archival Givenchy ensemble, and winged Matières Fécales masterpiece all contributed to a cohesive palette of luminous neutrals. Although these garments were not necessarily designed to match Pantone’s exact color specification, the visual relationship is difficult to overlook.

What makes the connection especially interesting is that Roach had already reserved the winged gown long before Pantone announced its 2026 selection. The ensemble was chosen for its relationship to The Odyssey, not because of a published color forecast. Nevertheless, its eventual appearance resonated with a palette that had become particularly relevant to the year. It is an elegant reminder that developing a strong creative vision can sometimes produce results that align with cultural trends without intentionally following them.

Great Fashion Doesn’t Happen Overnight

Zendaya’s The Odyssey press tour was a celebration of more than extraordinary gowns. It showcased the relationship between historical inspiration, contemporary design, and the kind of creative preparation that often goes unnoticed behind a glamorous red carpet appearance. From ancient accessories and archival couture to dramatic silhouettes and emerging designers, each look contributed to a carefully developed fashion narrative. And while the Schiaparelli gown demonstrated Roach’s ability to act quickly, the Matières Fécales creation revealed the opposite side of his expertise: knowing when to wait.

Two years of anticipation culminated in a single unforgettable appearance. That distinction is what separates assembling a beautiful wardrobe from developing a lasting creative vision. Because in fashion, being ahead of the curve isn’t always about predicting the next trend. Sometimes, it’s about recognizing the right moment before it even exists.
